Chelsea could face a summer of upheaval if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.
Prior to Christmas, Chelsea appeared in pole position to return to Europe’s elite competition, and were second in the table to Liverpool. However, a poor run of results since then have seen them drop to sixth, outside the guaranteed top four places.
And that could see a number of players raising question marks about their futures, especially those who are already concerned about their lack of playing time this season under Enzo Maresca.
What could potentially save the situation is that the Premier League is currently leading the race, ahead of Italy and Spain, for the additional Champions League place next year, based on their UEFA coefficient (it goes to the top two at the end of the season). Italy’s case has been further undermined by both AC Milan and Atalanta being knocked out of this season’s play-offs.
And that means even a fifth placed finish would be good enough for a place in the 2025/2026 Champions League.
