Beto emulates Mikel Arteta by achieving Arsenal manager’s 15-year Everton record against Manchester United

Everton striker Beto has followed in the footsteps of Mikel Arteta by continuing his incredible scoring streak under David Moyes.

The Toffees striker put his side 1-0 up against Manchester United on Saturday, netting the opener in a thrilling 2-2 draw.

In doing so, Beto matched the feat of current Arsenal manager Arteta, who played six years at Everton earning 209 appearances.

Arteta is the last player under Moyes to enjoy a four-match scoring streak in the Premier League – doing so for Everton all the way back in 2010.

Beto has now replicated that feat with goals against Leicester, Liverpool, Crystal Palace and now Man United.

However, despite the Toffees racing into a two-goal lead before half-time, they threw away three points and drew the game 2-2.

Beto’s £25.75m move from Udinese in 2023 went under the radar as he struggled to adapt to England’s top-flight league.

But he has enjoyed a new lease of life with Moyes at the helm, averaging a goal every 88 minutes since the Scotsman became head coach in January.

During his 17 months with Sean Dyche, Beto averaged a goal every 290 minutes with a conversion rate five times lower than with Moyes.

The striker has scored five goals in his last four Premier League games, more than in his previous 44 appearances in the competition (one).

With centre forwards Armando Broja and Dominic Calvert-Lewin injured, he has had to step up to steer Everton away from relegation this season.

And the Guinea-Bissau international is now also the first player to score four matches in a row for the club since Richarlison in 2021.

On top of that, he is just the fourth Everton player to score the opening goal of a game in three successive Premier League appearances after Francis Jeffers, Nikica Jelavic and Richarlison.

Beto started his in-form streak against Leicester City, netting a brace followed by a goal against Liverpool to help Everton earn a point in their last-ever Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

He also scored the opener against Crystal Palace last week to help the Toffees slide up the Premier League table.

Speaking after the draw with Man United, Beto said: “We wanted more and deserved more. In the second half we dropped our standards.

“It’s all about confidence, today was about being in the right place at the right time and waiting for something, being active inside the box.

“I found the luck and scored the goal.”

Beto has also spoken about the changes Moyes has brought to Everton in recent days, saying: “Not just me, but for the team. He gave us the confidence and the mentality to change.

“We started to be more confident in our abilities and our strengths.”

He also revealed the veteran manager told him to ‘play your game’ and ‘play for his strengths’.

“We need you and keep working hard big man,” is what Moyes told him.

He continued: “He knew all my strengths so he told my teammates ‘you have a striker that likes to run in behind’.

“I think that when I’m 100% confident in my ability I can hurt defenders and do some damage, even if I don’t receive the ball I can fight for the first and second ball for my teammates.”
