Premier League give statement as Man United star sent off after VAR review in first half from hell

Patrick Dorgu suffered a first half to forget against Ipswich on Wednesday night in his first Premier League start at Old Trafford.

The Manchester United full-back’s woes began with a mix-up involving Andre Onana.

Dorgu had comfortably cut out an Ipswich long ball only for his goalkeeper to rush out of goal as he attempted to pass back to him.

As a result, the ball rolled past Onana for Jaden Philogene to fire the visitors in front after just four minutes.

A Sam Morsy own goal and Matthijs de Ligt strike saw United turn the match on its head, though.

However, Dorgu’s night would go from bad to worse after he was shown a straight red card.

The Danish defender initially escaped punishment for a challenge on Omari Hutchinson before a VAR review.

After his tackle was reviewed, however, the decision was overturned and a red card was shown by referee Darren England.

The decision was followed by a statement from the Premier League Match Centre.

A post on X read: “VAR recommended an on-field review for a possible red card to Dorgu for the challenge on Hutchinson – with the contact deemed serious foul play.

“Upon review, the referee issued a red card to Dorgu.”

Just minutes after Dorgu’s dismissal. Philogene pulled Ipswich back level in first half stoppage time.

Fortunately for the January signing, Harry Maguire restored United’s advantage two minutes after the restart.

The 20-year-old was signed by Ruben Amorim in January, joining from Lecce on a five-and-a-half year deal.

United also have the option to extend his contract by a further year until 2031.

However, Dorgu will be unavailable for next weekend’s FA Cup fifth round clash with Fulham through suspension.

His red card against the Tractor Boys was the second of his career after he was also dismissed for Lecce against Cagliari back in August.

Meanwhile, it is the fifth time United have been reduced to 10 men this season.

Bruno Fernandes has been sent off three times across all competitions, whilst Diogo Dalot was also shown two yellow cards against Arsenal in the FA Cup last month.
