Liverpool is at risk of losing Trent Alexander-Arnold at the end of the season, with a free transfer to Real Madrid an increasingly likely prospect.

However, with no real news in the last two months, it isn’t completely out of the question that the local hero stays at Anfield. Alexander-Arnold is the club’s vice captain, the armband once worn by his hero Steven Gerrard is within sniffing distance, and he’s adored by the fans.

Alexander-Arnold is Madrid’s top target for the summer and his close friendship with Jude Bellingham has led many to believe a move to Spain is a formality, especially considering there’s an argument to be made that he’s won literally everything he could win at Liverpool.

But the newly-released ‘Liverpool FC: Doubters to Believers” documentary may shed some light on his decision-making process and offer a brief, slim glimmer of hope to fans hoping for a U-turn.

Speaking about the 2018 Champions League final, which Liverpool lost to Madrid, Alexander-Arnold highlighted the importance of winning trophies for his mindset. “It’s the moment, you know? It’s the moment that you’ve worked so hard for however many years,” he told the Amazon Prime cameras.

“What’s the point of me coming in every day? What’s the point in me thinking I need to get nine hours sleep at night? What’s the point in me thinking I have to eat a certain diet every single day of my life? If I’m doing all that, I have to think that equates to a trophy. It has to.”

Alexander-Arnold shone the following season as Liverpool made it six in Madrid, beating Tottenham Hotspur at the Wanda Metropolitano to become European champion once again.

And it’s clear to see how much that win meant to the young right-back, who said in the documentary: “I owe it to that six-year-old lad who walked through the academy gates the first day. I owe it to the teenager that never went to a party, was doing homework in the back of a bus from training. I owe it to him who sacrificed everything.”

Liverpool is still fighting for three trophies this season, while Madrid is facing the very realistic prospect of a campaign devoid of any silverware at all.

The Reds are running away with the Premier League title, needing just seven wins to mathematically win the trophy for the second time in five years, is in the Carabao Cup final and is still in the Champions League.

Madrid, on the other hand, may well be in the Copa del Rey semi-finals and still in the Champions League, but finished runners-up in the Spanish Super Cup and faces a tough fight with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in La Liga.

If Alexander-Arnold is serious about his desire and determination to win trophies, it’s not completely out of the question that Liverpool is a more attractive prospect than Madrid.
