Anthony Gordon is set to be suspended for the upcoming Carabao Cup final between Liverpool and Newcastle. The England winger was shown a straight red card in the FA Cup tie with Brighton.
Newcastle had led in the fifth round game after Alexander Isak scored on his return from injury before Brighton leveled the scores through Yankuba Minteh against his former club.
Both sides went in search of a winner and tempers spilled over in a huge flash point as the game headed towards extra time. Gordon went to ground after a challenge from Brajan Gruda while chasing a ball over the top. The home side appealed for a penalty but Anthony Taylor waved it away.
Clearly frustrated, Gordon then soon clashed with Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke in a moment of madness. The ex-Everton winger raised his hand and shoved Van Hecke to the ground, leaving Taylor with little option but to show a red card.
Liverpool and Newcastle are set to meet at Wembley in two weeks’ time, with Newcastle playing one Premier League match against West Ham before then. However as the red card was for violent conduct, he is set to sit out three matches.
The news is a real setback for Eddie Howe, who was boosted by the return to his starting lineup of Isak and midfielder Joelinton. Swedish striker Isak was withdrawn soon after the red card and appeared to be limping as he made his way down the tunnel.
