Liverpool could miss out on summer transfer as Barcelona enters conversation

Liverpool’s pursuit of key summer transfer target Alexander Isak is facing a potential roadblock as Barcelona has reportedly entered the conversation.

Barcelona faces a challenging task in the next year or two as it searches for a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski. Several names have emerged as potential additions for the La Liga club including the Newcastle striker.

Barcelona is prioritizing a forward capable of playing both centrally and on the left wing. The Catalan club believes that the Swedish international, who is sought after by a number of clubs, fits this profile perfectly, aligning with the playing style preferred by its manager Hansi Flick.

Barcelona is aware that Isak, is open to a move, but several challenges remain. The biggest hurdle is his €180 million price tag ($186M), which would set a new Premier League transfer record.

Additionally, top Premier League clubs, except Manchester City, are vying for his signature, alongside Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. Bayern, like Barcelona, is facing a similar dilemma as their current star, Harry Kane, is set to turn 32 this summer and has a €65 million release clause ($67M), making Isak an even more appealing option for them.

With 21 goals across all competitions this season, the 25-year-old forward has caught the attention of top clubs in England and Europe. However, there’s no indication that the Newcastle striker will force a move at the end of the 2024-25 season.

Isak desires regular Champions League football, and Newcastle’s qualification could boost its chances of keeping him. Despite this, the club is determined to retain him even if they miss out on Europe. The potential transfer fee for Isak will largely depend on whether he pressures for a move, making negotiations more complicated.

If Isak decides to leave amid interest from Barcelona and other clubs, a compromise may be necessary if suitors cannot meet Newcastle’s asking price. Barcelona has also shown interest in RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres, but with the speed of the market, it’s unlikely these players will still be available in two years. New talent will inevitably emerge, offering Barcelona alternative options.

Liverpool could face a busy summer transfer window, regardless of how the rest of the season unfolds under Arne Slot. Despite the team’s strong form, there are areas in need of improvement, particularly at left-back and striker. Upgrading both positions seems realistic, as the Reds look to strengthen their squad further.
