Eredivisie giants PSV Eindhoven and Premier League powerhouses Arsenal both have some recent wrongs to right in Tuesday’s Champions League last-16 first leg at the Philips Stadion.
Peter Bosz‘s men have only won one of their last six games, although that triumph is the one that got them this far, as they overturned a 2-1 playoff deficit against Juventus with a 3-1 second-leg success on home soil.
Meanwhile, an injury-hit Arsenal have failed to score in three of their last four games, but they placed third in the league phase and are statistically one of the best defensive teams on the continent this season.
Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.
Head-to-head record
Previous meetings: 10
PSV wins: 2
Draws: 4
Arsenal wins: 4
Becoming increasingly familiar foes in European competition, PSV Eindhoven and Arsenal have now met 10 times on the continent, and the English titans hold the bragging rights with four victories compared to just two for the Rood-Witten.
Another four showdowns have ended all square, including a 1-1 stalemate during the league phase of the 2023-24 Champions League, although a comprehensive 4-0 win for Arsenal preceded that dead-rubber draw in Eindhoven.
The 2024-25 Champions League will see Arsenal and PSV lock horns for the third year running, as they were also pitted together in the Europa League group stage in 2022-23, where a 1-0 home win for the Gunners preceded a 2-0 success for the Rood-Witten on their own patch.
Indeed, Eindhoven has not been the happiest of haunts for the Gunners in previous years, as they have only won one of their previous five away games against PSV, and none of their last four.
That solitary triumph came in the clubs’ first-ever competitive meeting in September 2002, as Gilberto Silva, Freddie Ljungberg and Thierry Henry (2) were on target in a routine 4-0 victory for Arsene Wenger‘s team.
However, Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw away to PSV in the 2004-05 group stage before a fatal 1-0 loss in the first leg of their 2006-07 last-16 battle, which preceded another 1-1 stalemate at the Emirates as the Dutch side progressed to the quarter-finals.
The North London giants are unbeaten in their previous five home clashes with PSV, though, also playing out a goalless draw at Highbury in November 2002 and prevailing 1-0 in September 2004 courtesy of an own goal by Alex.
The ex-Chelsea defender coincidentally turned the ball into his own net yet again in the 2006-07 last-16 second leg, before atoning for his mistake with the equaliser that eliminated Arsenal from the competition.
Alex’s two own goals and one correct strike against the Gunners technically makes him the joint-highest scorer in this head-to-head, level with Henry’s three for Arsenal.
