‘He knew’: Odegaard shares how Lewis-Skelly reacted after coming off tonight and what Arsenal players now plan to do

Arsenal have one foot in the Champions League quarter-finals after running out 7-1 winners against PSV Eindhoven in their last-16 first leg in the Netherlands.

Jurrien Timber, Ethan Nwaneri and Mikel Merino all scored for Arsenal in the opening 45 minutes at the Philips Stadion, though Noa Lang also got on the scoresheet for PSV.

However, the Gunners ran riot in the second half as Martin Odegaard and Leandro Trossard both struck in the first few minutes after the restart.

The Arsenal captain then added a sixth in the 73rd minute before Riccardo Calafiori made it 7-1 in the 85th minute of the match.

The only negative of sorts from the game was Myles Lewis-Skelly coming off in the first half after nearly getting himself sent off.

Lewis-Skelly was already on a yellow card when he brought down Richard Ledezma deep inside Arsenal’s half.

Referee Jesus Gil Manzano awarded a free-kick for the challenge, but opted not to give Lewis-Skelly his marching orders.

Mikel Arteta opted to take no chances, replacing Lewis-Skelly with Calafiori in the 35th minute of the match.

Odegaard, speaking after the game, shared how the Hale End graduate took the substitution and what the Gunners players plan to do in response.

Martin Odegaard says Arsenal players will help Myles Lewis-Skelly

Odegaard, speaking on Amazon Prime Sport, said Lewis-Skelly took his early substitution “really well”.

The teenager knew that it was a “tricky” situation in wake of the challenge on Ledezma despite already being on a booking.

Odegaard then said Arsenal’s players will help him overcome this latest setback, while stressing that he will learn from it too.

“Lewis-Skelly took that [substitution] really well. He knew it was tricky, when you’re on a yellow and a tough challenge there.

“He took that well and we will help him. He will learn from that as well.”

Lewis-Skelly was sent off against Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier in the season, only for his ban to later be overturned.

However, he was then sent off against West Ham, picking up a straight red for denial of a goalscoring opportunity when he brought down Mohammed Kudus.
