Premier League club ‘demand record £86m compensation fee’ as manager wanted by Champions League side

A Premier League club’s manager is a ‘target’ for a team that has competed in this year’s Champions League.

RB Leipzig are reportedly considering parting ways with their current head coach, Marco Rose.

Rose, 48, joined the club in 2022, having previously managed RB Salzburg, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Borussia Dortmund.

However, things have not gone as well as he may have liked this term, with Leipzig currently in sixth place in the Bundesliga, having previously dropped out of the Champions League in the 36-team group phase with just one win from eight fixtures as they finished in a lowly 34th place.

As a result, Red Bull’s Global Head of Soccer and former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has drawn up a three-man shortlist of potential replacements for Rose, according to Tribal Football.

The list includes Stuttgart boss Sebastian Hoeness and Benfica head coach Roger Schmidt.

The third man on the list is Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, who previously managed in Germany with Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt.

And Klopp’s admiration for Glasner, 50, is no secret.

“Oliver is someone whose work I know pretty well as he is a manager who did a really good job in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt before moving to Palace earlier this year,” Klopp said in his programme notes in April 2024.

“Replacing a club legend like Roy Hodgson would not be easy for anyone, but Oliver’s record, reputation and ability make him a wise choice, I would say. I do not know how well known he was in England before he came to the Premier League, but his CV speaks for itself, and it is even decorated with a Europa League, which was won a couple of seasons back with Frankfurt.

“Oliver has not been in this country for too long, but already you can see his methods and his work starting to show at Palace. For this reason and many more besides, not least the quality of their players, we should prepare for a proper test today as clearly one is coming.”

It is unclear if Glasner would leave Palace for Leipzig given their stable position in the Premier League.

Last summer, it was widely reported that Bayern Munich were keen on bringing the 50-year-old to the club, but their interest cooled after the Eagles demanded a compensation fee of £86m, according to the Express. A similar fee would likely be demanded by Palace chairman Steve Parish if he were to let the Austrian join Leipzig.
