Newcastle United has received a significant lift as Alexander Isak returned to training without any lingering effects from Sunday’s FA Cup loss to Brighton and Hove Albion.
The Swedish forward was substituted towards the end of the 2-1 defeat at St James’ Park due to “tightness”, but his groin injury, which sidelined him for the 2-0 loss at Liverpool, is not considered serious.
Isak was among the Newcastle players featured at the club’s Carabao Cup media day for broadcasters on Wednesday. When queried about his condition ahead of the Wembley spectacle later this month, a cheerful Isak simply responded: “I am fine.”
Given Newcastle’s recent troubles, including Lewis Hall’s season-ending ankle problem and Anthony Gordon’s confirmed suspension after the club decided against appealing his clear red card, seeing Isak moving freely was viewed as a significant positive.
On Sunday, head coach Eddie Howe had commented: “Alex just felt a bit of general tightness. I don’t think it was an injury, it was just general tightness, but we felt as though he had to come off.”
It remains to be seen whether Newcastle will rest Isak at West Ham to ensure his availability for the big match against Liverpool at Wembley on March 16.
However, with Howe’s squad stretched thin and limited star power available, it wouldn’t be surprising if Isak starts from the bench at the London Stadium on Monday.

On the double setback over Hall and Gordon, Howe told Sky Sports: “It is a big blow for us. That left side has been a constant source of creativity for us this year. Both players have been outstanding.
“I don’t know how to put a positive spin on it but there will be opportunities for other players and we have to try and find a solution. I am really disappointed for both players.
“We have to put the disappointment behind us and move forward. Both Lewis and Anthony will want us to do that. They will be keen for the lads to do well and our challenge now is to regroup.”
