Newcastle United has confirmed it will be without Lewis Hall for the Carabao Cup final, while the Magpies also have admitted defeat in their hopes of Anthony Gordon being available for the clash with Liverpool, according to reports.
It comes after a nightmare weekend for Eddie Howe, who watched his Newcastle side crash out of the FA Cup courtesy of a 2-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. To rub salt in wounds, Gordon was sent off for a late coming together with Dutchman Jan Paul van Hecke.
The former Everton winger struck him in the face resulting in a straight red card. Howe said after the match that he would wait to review the incident before deciding whether to lodge an appeal, although pundits have been widely in agreement that any attempt would be futile.
As per Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, Newcastle has decided against appealing Gordon’s dismissal which means he’ll miss the Carabao Cup final at Wembley next weekend, plus the upcoming Premier League against West Ham United and Brentford.
It’s not just Gordon’s suspension that has emerged as a problem for Howe, Newcastle also suffered a spate of fresh injury issues on Sunday. Hall missed the game altogether and Howe said after the game that the left-back was set to see a specialist.
An update emerged on Wednesday morning, when the club wrote on social media: “Lewis Hall will miss the rest of the 2024/25 season after sustaining an injury to a bone in his foot. Following a scan and advice from a specialist, Lewis will undergo surgery before a period of rehabilitation with the club’s medical team. “
The news comes a week after Hall dealt well with Mohamed Salah at Anfield in Liverpool’s 2-0 Premier League win over Newcastle.

Tino Livramento and Kieran Trippier also picked up minor knocks against the Seagulls, while Alexander Isak was replaced in the 86th minute and appeared to be limping as he came off.
“It was just general tiredness, I don’t think there is a problem there,” said Howe after the game, meaning fans are hopeful the Swedish star will be available to face Liverpool next week.
Elsewhere, Sven Botman remains an injury doubt and was described as ‘close’ to being back for the Brighton match, while Jamaal Lascelles is ruled out with a long-term knee injury.
