Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Vitinha has vowed that the French team will win at Anfield and secure a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

PSG dominated for much of the last-16 first leg at the Parc des Princes but could not score, as Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson produced a stunning performance to keep the opposition at bay.

In the closing stages of the match, Harvey Elliott popped up at the other end of the pitch to hand the Reds a 1-0 aggregate lead heading into next week’s second leg on Merseyside.

Anfield is famously a difficult place for opposition teams to go and record a result in Europe, but Vitinha is feeling bullish about his team’s chances.

“Tough. Everyone saw it. Football is like that, it’s hard to play a game like that, against a team like that,” Vitinha said after Liverpool’s smash-and-grab win.

“Their only shot, I don’t know… It’s tough, but now we’re going to show what kind of team we are. It’s been a long time since we lost, it’s up to us to show our personality and our strength. We’re going to go there, we’re going to play a great game, we’re going to score and we’re going to go through, I’m sure of it.”

Vitinha was asked about an incident in the first half when Ibrahima Konate escaped a VAR check for a potential red card after appearing to shove Bradley Barcola to the ground when he was Liverpool’s last man.

The Portugal international neglected to give his view on the matter, saying: “I’m on the pitch, it’s hard to see, I’m not going to talk about that. We’re not going to hide behind that. I remain optimistic, a victory was more than deserved.

“I know that the only thing that matters is when the ball is in it. I’m sure it’s going to happen at Liverpool, we’re going to play a great game.”
