For years Bayern Munich had been the undisputed kings of German football. They had won 12 Bundesliga titles in succession, won five German cups in the same era, and flew the flag in Europe, lifting the Champions League trophy in 2020.
But last season their reign at the top was rudely interrupted by Bayer Leverkusen, managed by former Bayern player Xabi Alonso, whose side swept all before them, not losing a domestic match as they powered their way to a league and cup double.
That has made Bayern, now managed by Vincent Kompany, even more determined to regain their crown. They are eight points clear of Leverkusen at the top of the Bundesliga with ten games to go, and more evidence that the balance of power in Germany has shifted in favour of Bayern again was provided when the pair were drawn together in the round of 16 in the Champions League, with the home side winning 3 – 0 against a Leverkusen team that finished with ten men.
Leverkusen have become famed for their powers of recovery in recent years, but this is one comeback that may be beyond them in the return leg on March 11th. The match will kick off at 9 pm local time and will be shown live on terrestrial and satellite channels throughout Europe, and the rest of the world. Those who cannot watch the game can also keep up to date with developments via live scores available from a variety of platforms.
