In recent years the Premier League has been blessed with two brilliant Brazilian goalkeepers in the shape of Ederson and Alisson Becker who have both inspired title wins.
For his troubles, Ederson has six Premier League medals to his name at Manchester City, whereas Alisson won the solitary title at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp.
Of course, Alisson will now be expecting to add to that medal collection during Arne Slot’s first season at Anfield – Liverpool are currently 13 points ahead of Arsenal at the top of the league.
And judging by Alisson’s heroics against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, he might also be hoping for more European success too.
Two brilliant goalkeepers, but ones who have often been compared and scrutinised given how they also compete for their country too.
Kasper Schmeichel explains why he might prefer Ederson to Alisson
Interestingly, 32-year-old Alisson has 70 caps for Brazil whereas Ederson has 29, who is one year younger than his Liverpool counterpart.
And when speaking on the ‘Stick to Football’ podcast, former Premier League winner Kasper Schmeichel was asked who he thought was better out of the pair.
Schmeichel is currently playing his football for Celtic, enjoying his own personal triumphs in the Champions League this season.
And when asked the coveted question, Schmeichel seemed to be leaning in Ederson’s favour, even if he did rate both very highly.
Schmeichel said: “I think they’re both very good.
“For me, I’ve always had a soft spot for Ederson, because I think he changed the game. He changed the game in terms of, like, [Manuel] Neuer could play out from the back and all that, but Ederson was almost poetry watching it. It was so, and I remember playing against him for Leicester.
“It was the one team we didn’t press, because if you press Ederson, he’d find David Silva, or you know he’d find De Bruyne, and he’d play these ridiculous passes.”
Liverpool were open to letting Alisson leave last year
Of course, it should be noted that Schmeichel was asked that question before Alisson’s heroics against PSG, which might have made the choice even harder.
As stated, it seems as if Brazil have decided that Alisson is the stronger keeper given his continued selection as the country’s number one.
And it’s probably fair to say that Ederson would only sit on the bench for a handful of teams in world football, explaining his unlucky predicament with Brazil.
Interestingly, Liverpool were considering selling Alisson last year given that Giorgi Mamardashvili will soon be arriving at the club.
However, Slot’s side will surely now make a u-turn on any such decision given that it’s almost impossible to upgrade on Alisson right now, let alone how irritated Liverpool supporters might be if the club attempted to do so.
