Luis Enrique admitted it felt “weird” for Paris Saint-Germain to have lost to Liverpool after dominating the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie.
PSG registered 27 goal attempts to Liverpool’s two on the night, but Harvey Elliott was the only player to find the back of the net as the Reds produced the ultimate smash-and-grab performance.
Alisson was in inspired form in goal for Liverpool, with the Brazilian saying after the game that his display might have been the best of his career to date.
Despite being disappointed with the final result, Enrique was pleased with the way his team played. He told Canal+: “That’s very unfair. It’s the most complete game we played in the Champions League. They shot once, they scored. Their best player was the goalie. It’s a bit weird. I’m very proud of my team. We were far better than Liverpool.”
In a separate interview with TNT Sports, Enrique vowed that his team will record the result required to knock Liverpool out of the competition at Anfield next week.
“We are ready to go to Liverpool,” he said. “We don’t have anything to lose, and today Liverpool created one or two chances maximum. I’m proud of my players. Liverpool is a top quality team and I think they didn’t feel that (playing against a team as good as PSG) this season with Arne Slot. For us, it is important but we have a last chance. Of course, we are going to do it.”
Enrique described Alisson as Liverpool’s “best player” on the night, and Reds head coach Arne Slot was full of praise for his No.1. “He’s the best in the world,” Slot told TNT Sports. “I’ve had some very good players as a manager but I’ve never had the best goalkeeper in the world, but that’s what he is.
“To go away with a win over here was probably a bit more than we deserved. He was outstanding, in the second half I think most of their shots was outside the box. It’s their quality that they hit the ball like they do.”
