The 2025 summer transfer window could witness one of the most astonishing moves in soccer history, as Real Madrid’s star forward Vinicius has been a constant target for the Saudi Pro League. While it is no secret that clubs in Saudi Arabia are willing to break records to sign elite talent, the nature of this proposed deal is particularly intriguing. But could Vinicius really make a temporary move to Saudi Arabia, earn an astronomical salary, and then return to Madrid?

Reports indicate that Saudi clubs—backed by the country’s Public Investment Fund (PIF)—are said to be prepared to launch a staggering bid of $254 million for the 24-year-old Brazilian forward. If this deal materializes, it would eclipse Neymar’s 2017 world-record transfer of $240 million to Paris Saint-Germain.

Preliminary discussions have reportedly taken place with Vinicius’ representatives regarding the possibility of a summer move. Given that his current contract with Real Madrid expires in 2026, this might be one of the last opportunities for the Spanish giants to secure a colossal transfer fee before his market value starts to diminish.

The Saudi Pro League has already attracted a host of high-profile players, including ex-La Liga stars Neymar, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Karim Benzema. With the country set to host the 2034 World Cup, there is a strategic push to enhance the league’s global stature. Los Blancos’ jewel could be the next major star to join the project, solidifying Saudi Arabia’s ambitions of becoming a soccer powerhouse.

Real Madrid’s stance: Difficult decision

Real Madrid remains reluctant to part ways with Vinicius, a player who has been integral to their success. Since his arrival in 2018, he has won multiple La Liga titles and two Champions League trophies. However, the financial incentives involved in the deal could complicate Madrid’s decision-making process.

Beyond financial aspects, the Ballon d’Or runner-up has faced ongoing racist abuse in Spain, an issue that has deeply affected him. This sentiment has fueled speculation that he might be open to a fresh start in a new league.

Contract talks and the unique idea

At the heart of the uncertainty surrounding Vinicius’s future is an ongoing contract negotiation. The Brazilian is reportedly demanding an annual salary of $22-27 million, a significant increase from his current $16 million wages. However, Madrid president Florentino Perez is reluctant to break the club’s strict wage structure, fearing that granting the 24-year-old’s request would lead to similar demands from Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham.

In an unexpected twist, Vinicius is reportedly open to a short-term move to Saudi Arabia—for two to three years—before returning to Real Madrid on a free transfer, Spanish outlet Sport suggests. This would allow him to maximize his earnings without Madrid committing to a long-term financial adjustment. However, this proposal is unlikely to be well-received by Saudi clubs, who would expect a permanent deal to justify the enormous investment.
