Liverpool beat Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, and Harvey Elliott was the hero.
Arne Slot’s side were nowhere near their best in Paris. They were dominated by the French giants, who were extremely unlucky to get nothing from the game.
Alisson Becker’s brilliant performance in goal was the reason why Liverpool stayed in the clash, and just when it looked like the game would end in a draw, substitute Elliott stepped up.
The Englishman scored in the 87th minute, and that helped Liverpool take a 1-0 lead back to Anfield ahead of the second leg next week.
Ryan Gravenberch and Liverpool stars show love to Harvey Elliott after PSG win
Elliott has had a frustrating season so far.
The 21-year-old broke his foot early on in the campaign and that kept him out of action for a few weeks. Even since his return, he hasn’t been able to play a lot of football.
Most of Elliott’s appearances for Liverpool have been as a substitute, and it was no different against PSG in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
However, Elliott had an instant impact.
Less than a minute after replacing Mohamed Salah on the right flank, Elliott found himself at the end of an assist from Darwin Nunez, and he finished it brilliantly.
That was enough for Liverpool to win, and many of Elliott’s teammates have shown him love on Instagram after the game.
The likes of Virgil van Dijk, Wataru Endo and Curtis Jones replied with emojis, while Ryan Gravenberch described Elliott using just one word: “Quality!”
Why Arne Slot has not given more chances to Harvey Elliott at Liverpool
Elliott is a very good player, but he still hasn’t had the amount of game time that he would’ve liked.
The 21-year-old has only played just 507 minutes of football in all competitions so far this season – just 76 of those have come in the Premier League.
Slot admitted after the game that he knows Elliott must be frustrated with his lack of game time, but the Liverpool boss explained honestly why he hasn’t been able to give him more minutes.
He said, as per Liverpool’s official website: “I can understand that he is sometimes frustrated by the playing time he gets because he is a good player, he showed at Liverpool already that he is a good player, but he is in competition for players that I hardly take off.
“So, Dominik Szoboszlai is always the one that just keeps on going, he also scores goals but he’s so important for us with all the running he does. And yeah, Mo Salah I think is quite key for everyone as well.
“So, he has to do it with limited playing time but he just keeps on going.”
