Manchester United are determined to fight off interest in midfielder Kobbie Mainoo from Chelsea.
The 19 year old academy graduate is already under contract at Old Trafford until 2027, but they now want to offer him a new deal which will see him get a substantial wage increase, commensurate with his status as a first-team regular and as an England international.
He is currently earning ₤20,000 a week, and his representatives want ₤180,000, although United are hoping some compromise over the sum can be reached.
That is despite speculation that Mainoo is one of the players that might need to be sacrificed in the summer as United seek money to fund a rebuild, with concerns that they are close to breaching PSR limits.
Chelsea, though, are waiting in the wings to pounce, and know that they will likely be able to promise Mainoo European football next season, and potentially Champions League, something United cannot unless they win the Europa League.
