Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has named a Premier League player he would “love” the Reds to sign— though it would be a very hard deal to get over the line.

“I’ll tell you what, that Morgan Rogers is a good player isn’t he?” Carragher said on The Overlap. “You know what, I’d love him for Liverpool. He’s a good player isn’t he?”

Signed for just $10.3 million (£8.0m/€9.5m) from Middlesbrough in 2024, Rogers has really established himself in the team under Unai Emery. And Aston Villa, who could face Liverpool in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, will be desperate to keep him.

Rogers would be ideal for the kind of soccer that Arne Slot plays at Anfield. He would cost a fortunate to get out of Villa Park, however, with the Birmingham club very much on the up and attempting to establish itself as a top European side.

Emery’s men are 10th in the Premier League standings at the moment ahead of facing Brentford this weekend. But they are only four points behind Chelsea in fifth spot — which could be enough to qualify for the Champions League this season.

“Liverpool should always be competing for a league title, we should always be competing for the Champions League. I’m hoping I will be able to keep the club at that level,” Slot told the BBC last month.

“I know people sometimes question this because they haven’t seen us doing a lot in the transfer market in the summer and now in the winter as well. There’s a reason for that — because we’re happy with the squad. But I do know we’re definitely working on strengthening in the summer.”

Liverpool.com says: Rogers would fit in brilliantly at Liverpool, there is no doubt about that. He has the kind of physique to thrive when it comes to the off-the-ball work and the close control and powerful dribbling ability to add something new to the Reds.

There are other priorities for Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes when the market opens, though. The Reds could do with a new number nine coming in and finding a long-term replacement for Andy Robertson should be high up on the agenda.

Plus, of course, there are some major contracts still to be sorted out. Rogers would be a dream addition in some ways, but he is not likely to be easily attainable.
