It was once the Premier League fixture that everybody – fans of both clubs and neutrals – looked forward to more than any other in the days when Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira, Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsène Wenger, and Martin Keown and Ruud van Nistelrooy used to bump heads, figuratively, and sometimes literally.
And whilst those days are long gone – it has been two decades since Arsenal won the Premier League whilst Manchester United are in seeming terminal decline, with the club struggling financially – this is still a fixture steeped in history.
Arguably United need the result more. Rúben Amórim has struggled to get the team playing the way he wants since taking over, in large part because the squad he has inherited is not suited to the job. Arsenal meanwhile have seen yet another pursuit of the league title end in disappointment, with Liverpool almost out of sight. With injuries having decimated their forward options it was a surprise when they contrived to score seven past PSV in the Champions League earlier in the week, whilst United were only drawing away in Spain at Real Sociedad.
United fans are planning to protest before the game at the club’s ownership but those who do finally make it into Old Trafford will still expect a show.
The match kicks off at 4.30 pm local time on March 9th. It will be shown on satellite TV in the UK, throughout Europe, and the rest of the world. Those who cannot watch the game can also keep up to date with developments via live scores available from a variety of channels.
