Barcelona‘s La Liga clash with Osasuna, scheduled for Saturday evening, has been postponed following the tragic news that their first-team doctor Carles Minarro Garcia has passed away.

The Catalan giants had been due to continue their La Liga season at their temporary home against Osasuna, but the death of their first-team doctor, who had been with the club since 2017, just hours before kickoff led to the club making a statement.

According to ESPN, the players were made aware of his passing after arriving at the stadium.

“FC Barcelona is deeply saddened to announce the passing of first-team doctor Carles Minarro Garcia this evening,” the club said in a statement. “For this reason, the match between FC Barcelona and CA Osasuna has been postponed to a later date.

“The FC Barcelona board of directors and all staff extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.”

Meanwhile, an Osasuna statement added: “Osasuna wishes to convey its deepest condolences to the family of Dr Carles Minarro Garcia and would like to send a warm hug to all the staff of FC Barcelona, as well as to its fans, at this difficult time. May he rest in peace.”

The match had been set to start at 8pm UK time, but a decision to suspend the contest was announced 20 minutes before kickoff.

“Always in our hearts, Doc,” midfielder Gavi posted on Instagram. “We will miss you a lot.”

“I still can’t believe it,” Pedri posted on his own account. “Sending a huge hug to all of Carles’ family and friends.”

Meanwhile, Ronald Araujo wrote on X: “It’s hard to believe. Rest in peace, Doc. Sending strength to Carles’ family and friends. May God strengthen your hearts in this difficult time.”

Barcelona are due to return to action against Benfica in the Champions League on Tuesday night, while they will continue their La Liga campaign away to Atletico Madrid next weekend.
