Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has said that he will not be given the same amount of time that Mikel Arteta has had at Arsenal to turn the 20-time English champions around.

Arteta was appointed Arsenal head coach in December 2019 when the capital outfit were 10th in the table, and he led the team to eighth in his first two seasons at the helm before improving to fifth in 2021-22.

Arsenal have finished second in each of the last two campaigns and are seemingly again on course for the runners-up spot this term, with Liverpool 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League table, albeit having played a game more.

Amorim was asked about Arteta’s journey with the Gunners during his press conference to preview Sunday’s contest between Man United and Arsenal at Old Trafford.

A disastrous Premier League season has left the Red Devils down in 14th spot in the table, and there has already been speculation surrounding the future of Amorim.

The Portuguese has claimed that he will not be given the same amount of time as Arteta had at Arsenal when asked if the rebuild required at Old Trafford was similar to the one needed at the Emirates Stadium.

Amorim: “I will not have the time Arteta had”

“I don’t feel that. I will not have the time Arteta had – I feel that. It’s a different club. So we just need to survive with the players [available] on Sunday. I think it’s a different club – in that aspect, the way Arteta dealt with that is an inspiration for everybody but I will not have the time like Arteta had,” Amorim told reporters.

The Man United head coach was also asked about the protests that are expected to occur ahead of Sunday’s clash, with the Man United fans set to make their feelings clear on the Glazers’ ownership.

“For everybody in our club it’s a really tough moment. It’s everything at the same time. The only thing I can do is, and our players can do is, perform well and win. People have the right to protest,” he said.

“I think it’s a good thing to do that. It’s part of our club. Everybody has a voice. But our job and my job is just to improve the team and give them something in this moment because they deserve it and they are amazing.”

Is Amorim under serious pressure at Man United?

It is difficult to imagine a scenario which leads to Amorim being sacked before the end of the season, but next week’s Europa League last-16 second leg against Real Sociedad is a simply gigantic affair.

The two teams are level at 1-1 following the first leg in Spain, with Mikel Oyarzabal‘s penalty cancelling out an opener from Joshua Zirkzee.

Man United’s season rests on the Europa League, and they are considered to be among the favourites for the competition despite their struggles domestically this term.

Amorim will surely be given the summer to bring his own players to the club, with a departure at this stage almost impossible, and a win over Arsenal on Sunday would be the perfect preparation for their second leg against Real Sociedad, which is comfortably their biggest match of the season to date.
