Manchester United reportedly targets Premier League striker amid potential Gyokeres snub

With a potential snub from Viktor Gyokeres, Manchester United reportedly targets a Premier League striker for the next season.

Manchester United’s disappointing 2024-25 season is nearing its conclusion, and head coach Ruben Amorim is already planning for the future by identifying key areas for improvement — with the forward position being a top priority. Amid reports that Viktor Gyokeres could turn down a move to Old Trafford, United is reportedly shifting focus to a Premier League striker instead.

Since Amorim’s arrival, speculation has grown regarding a potential move for Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres, given the strong relationship between the coach and the striker. According to Fabrizio Romano, this connection initially made a deal seem likely — but a major obstacle has emerged.

Romano reports that Gyokeres would prefer a move to a club competing in the UEFA Champions League. With United currently sitting 14th in the Premier League, eliminated from the FA Cup, and only competing in the Europa League as their route to European qualification, the club’s chances of landing the Swedish forward are reportedly dwindling.

United turns to Jean-Philippe Mateta

In response, Manchester United is reportedly monitoring Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta as a potential summer signing, according to The Sun. Mateta’s mobility and ability to operate across the front line reportedly make him an appealing option for Amorim’s system.

The club has reportedly scouted Mateta’s last three Premier League matches, impressed by his performances. The French striker has scored 15 goals and provided 3 assists in 33 games this season. His physical presence and playing style have drawn comparisons to Gyokeres, while his Premier League experience offers added value.

Amorim’s squad has lacked a reliable goal-scoring reference throughout the season. Joshua Zirkzee has managed just six goals and two assists in 41 appearances, while Rasmus Hojlund has scored seven goals and provided one assist in 36 games — both underwhelming returns given the club’s investment in their signings.

While Amorim has described the season as “unsavable,” United’s Europa League campaign remains crucial — not just for silverware, but for the financial boost needed to secure a spot in the next Champions League. Failure to qualify could force the club to offload key players to meet Profit & Sustainability Rules.
