Goals, the wrong type of birthday card to receive and a gift from Bayer Leverkusen. Happy 125th, Bayern Munich!
Vincent Kompany’s starting line-up saw a total of ten changes, including a debut start between the sticks for Jonas Urbig, from Bayern Munich’s triumphant midweek Champions League Round of 16 victory against bitter rivals, Bayer Leverkusen.
The Bavarians’ 125th birthday celebration was brought to an eery silence early on in the first half following a medical emergency in the VfL Bochum supporters’ end. The unfortunate medical situation drew some of the attention away from an action packed half, including three goals a penalty miss and a red card.
It was ultimately the controversial João Palhinha red card and an inspired fighting spirit that made the difference and saw Bochum secure a momentous 3-2 victory at the Allianz Arena.
These are the players who stood out.
Jersey Swap: Jakov Medić
Now it may seem strange to give this award to a defender who gave away a penalty and was on a team that conceded two goals. After all, statistically, players like Ibrahima Sissoko and Matúš Bero may have performed better but in the context of the game, Medić was the key to Bochum’s astonishing victory.
Hear me out, already one goal up, Jakov Medić takes a massive gamble and brings Leroy Sané down, preventing a very likely goal at the cost of a penalty that Serge Gnabry ultimately puts wide of the mark. That action alone, risky as it may have been, keeps Bochum in arm’s length of Bayern.
Cue the 31st minute, it would be the Croatian centre-back himself who would get a goal back for his side after Bayern’s failed corner clearance fell straight to the feet of Medić, who ultimately blasted the ball into the back of the net.
At 2-1 down after the first half Bochum was still in with a fighting chance, thanks to Medić, and boy did they make the most of it.
Preventing a goal and scoring one himself, Medić was the linchpin to a historic VfL Bochum victory at the Allianz Arena.
Der Kaiser: Hiroki Itō
A difficult award to give to a team that fell apart defensively, however, Itō capped an impressive first half display and overall solid performance.
The Japanese international showcased his excellent passing range, picking out Serge Gnabry, who assisted Raphaël Guerreiro for Bayern’s first goal of the game.
Itō proved he also has a knack for crossing following his fantastic looping cross to Thomas Müller, who headed the ball on to Raphaël Guerreiro, who made no mistake in front of goal and headed home for Bayern’s second of the day.
Vincent Kompany’s heavily rotated side was, as a whole, questionable defensively. However, Itō was by no means terrible in the defensive department and showed exactly what he can offer going forward.
Fußballgott: Leon Goretzka
This award was made a whole lot easier as a result of João Palhinha’s first half red card.
Combative, accurate passing and even a little something going forwards from time to time, Leon Goretzka’s remontada after been thrown out to the wolves has been a spectacle to see.
Bayern can only be thankful for Goretzka’s professionalism and patience to wait for his chance and take it.
Der Bomber: Leroy Sané
Part of what makes Leroy Sané fun (and infuriating) to watch is how (for better or for worse) unpredictable he can be.
Sané caused the Bochum defence all sorts of headaches with his change of pace and tight dribbling, and was even awarded a penalty in the 20th minute after being brought down whilst darting past a helpless Jakov Medić.
The 29-year-old was perhaps a little unlucky to come away empty handed, but nonetheless, Sané did a good job on the right flank.
Meister of the Match: Raphaël Guerreiro
Raphaël Guerreiro was, to many people’s surprise, deployed as the most advanced player in Kompany’s midfielder three.
Despite traditionally operating as a left-back, the Portuguese international wasted no time getting acquainted higher up on the pitch, scoring his third and fourth goal of the season.
Guerreiro did excellently to find pockets of attacking space to utilise and could have even had his hat-trick in the 58th minute when his poked shot slithered just wide of the goal after being one-on-one with Timo Horn.
