Mohamed Salah has once again etched his name into Liverpool’s history books with his goal against Southampton at Anfield.
The Egyptian star netted his 31st goal of the season, putting the Reds ahead against the Saints and moving him to third place in the club’s all-time top scorer list with a total of 242 goals.
This feat sees Salah surpassing the legendary Gordon Hodgson from the 1920s and 30s era, who scored 241 goals in just 377 matches. Hodgson was not only a footballer but also represented South Africa and England internationally and played cricket for Lancashire as a fast bowler.
Salah achieved this milestone in his 389th appearance for the Reds. Roger Hunt is second on the list with 285 goals in 492 matches, while Ian Rush leads with 346 goals in 660 appearances.
Salah’s goal was crucial in turning the tide after Liverpool fell behind to bottom club Southampton due to a mix-up between Virgil van Dijk and Alisson that allowed Will Smallbone to score. However, after some strategic changes by Arne Slot at halftime, the Premier League leaders managed to regain control.
Darwin Nunez equalized 51 minutes into the game, and two minutes later, he was fouled by Smallbone.
Salah confidently took the penalty, and despite Aaron Ramsdale guessing the right direction, the ball securely found its way into the net. A win over the Saints would provide Liverpool with a significant 16-point lead over Arsenal, who face Manchester United on Sunday.
Although the Gunners have a game in hand against Slot’s team, it seems unlikely that Liverpool would relinquish such a substantial lead, having suffered only one league defeat all season.
