This year has been not good for Pahlinha.
Bayern Munich’s 125th anniversary game did not go as planned.
What was meant to be a celebration at home turned into a nightmare, as the Bavarians were defeated 2-3 by VfL Bochum. Minutes after Raphaël Guerreiro’s first goal, a golden opportunity was handed to Bayern, as a penalty was awarded and it was missed by Serge Gnabry. A second goal from Guerreiro ensued, but the game went to hell right after. Jakov Medić made it 2-1 for Bochum with an exceptional shot that was far beyond saving, even by a terrific Jonas Urbig.
A controversial red card to João Palhinha further dampened the Bavarians’ efforts as they were left with ten men. He was sent off in the 43rd minute after an ugly tackle to Giorgos Masouras, hitting his ankle.
Per @iMiaSaMia, manager Vincent Kompany felt that the red card should not have impacted the result. To him, it was no excuse for losing.
“We’ll talk about this moment, but it shouldn’t be an excuse. Even with 10 men we were 2-1 ahead, we should be winning this game, or at least avoiding defeat. But I don’t want to take the credit away from Bochum, they deserved their win,” Kompany said.
Palhinha’s term in Bayern so far, has been anything but satisfactory. The Portuguese star has been sidelined with injury after injury. He only returned in February and has made only 12 appearances so far in the league, including the fixture against Bochum.
