Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League this weekend after their closest title rivals Arsenal drew 1-1 with Manchester United.
A day prior to the Gunners clash with Man United at Old Trafford, Liverpool came from 1-0 down to beat Southampton 3-1 thanks to a goal from Darwin Nunez and a second-half penalty brace from Mohamed Salah.
That result moved Liverpool 16 points clear of Arsenal, who then picked up a point on the road against United with their 1-1 draw. Mikel Arteta’s side found themselves 1-0 down in first-half stoppage time after United skipper Bruno Fernandes netted a free-kick to give his side the lead.
However, after the break, Arsenal managed to equalize through Declan Rice, who produced a fine effort from outside the box to level proceedings at Old Trafford.
While both sides had opportunities to win the game, with Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard dragging a shot wide, and United substitute Rasmus Hojlund robbed of the ball before pulling the trigger by a last-ditch Rice tackle, the two sides had to share the spoils in the end.
And the results this weekend make it look increasingly likely it will be the Reds who lift the Premier League title come May. Arne Slot’s side has lost just once this season in the Premier League so far.
Their form this season has seen them force Arsenal, who are currently without Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus, to have to be perfect in the league to keep pace with the Reds.
Arsenal do have a game in hand on Liverpool, with the Gunners set to take on Chelsea next weekend whilst the Reds face off against Newcastle United at Wembley in the Carabao Cup final.
But in reality, even if Arsenal do beat Chelsea to close the gap from 15 to 12, Liverpool looks to have an unassailable lead at the top of the Premier League.
They have been the best team in the division this term and barring a calamitous downturn in form, they will be Premier League champions come May.
Liverpool.com says: “Arne Slot deserves tremendous credit for just how well he managed Liverpool this term in his debut season in charge at Anfield. The Dutchman was given the unenviable task of following Jurgen Klopp, but it might be Klopp who is envious of Slot now given how well his first season in charge has gone.
“The Reds will be given their first chance at winning silverware next weekend against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final. They look a certainty to win the Premier League too and remain in the Champions League, with Liverpool set to welcome PSG to Anfield next week following their recent 1-0 win in Paris.”
