Diogo Jota has revealed he has not been at his best this season with injuries impacting his performances.

The Liverpool forward has started just 10 Premier League matches this term, including a run of four months with making the starting XI. Having missed a chunk of the campaign between October and December, Jota returned to the team just before Christmas but then suffered a relapse on his injury which forced him to miss five matches in January.

Manager Arne Slot has repeatedly spoken about the need to be careful with his minutes and Jota himself admits it has been an infuriating campaign at times despite Liverpool’s team success

“It’s been a difficult season for me personally, I had a few complications throughout the season,” he told reporters on Monday ahead of the Champions League tie against Paris Saint-Germain.

“These last couple of months matter the most when they decide things and I don’t feel I am at my best form at the moment but certainly by playing I will get there. I always try to do my best no matter what.”

Asked when he expects to be back to his best, Jota replied: “You never know, that’s football. I don’t play alone, it’s not an individual sport and there are a lot of things that you can’t control yourself but one thing is is to give your best and that’s always what I do on the pitch.

With the number of games top-level professionals are playing at present, Jota is not alone in seeing his levels drop in recent years. But amid the rigours of the demanding schedule, the Portugal international he is focusing on the team display, not his own performances.
