Rangers Sensation Emerges As A Transfer Target For Top European Sides: Blow For The Gers?

If a recent report from Africafoot is believed to be true, Rangers attacking ace Hamza Igamane has emerged as a transfer target for La Liga heavyweights Sevilla and Ligue 1 giants Marseille. They scouted him extensively in recent months and are now ready to make the move over a potential summer transfer.

The 22-year-old Moroccan international had a slow start to life in Glasgow due to injury woes. But he has been exquisite since finding his feet in Scottish football. Despite Philippe Clement’s dismissal and the appointment of Barry Ferguson as the new interim chief, Igamane continues to impress having exhibited his versatility in and around the attacking third.

While he is having a goal drought since finding the net against Aberdeen two months back, Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has handed him a first senior call-up for the World Cup qualifiers against Niger and Tanzania. An injury to Olympiacos striker Ayoub El Kaabi paved the way for Igamane in The Atlas Lions’ 34-man extended squad for the double-header.

Why Rangers Should Welcome Summer Bids

The young centre-forward joined the Light Blues last summer from AS FAR. He was roped in for a minuscule £1.7m following 16 goals and 8 assists in 58 appearances for his boyhood club. So far he has netted 13 times and laid on 3 more in 35 appearances across competitions, and his mastery high up the pitch caught the eyes of Everton amid rumours of a potential January transfer. Clubs in England, Spain and France are keeping close tabs on his progress, thus allowing Rangers to maximize the profit for Igamane who is tied down till the summer of 2029.

The Gers are going through a dreadful domestic campaign but, at the same time, have been a completely different force in the Europa League. They clinched a comprehensive 3-1 win against Fenerbahce in Istanbul, and therefore, hold a two-goal advantage before hosting Jose Mourinho’s men in the return leg of the Round of 16. Although the Moroccan was only introduced for the final few minutes, Ferguson’s formation tweak could see him play a crucial role in the coming days provided they progress to the quarterfinals and beyond.

Igamane revealed his ambition to play for a ‘big European club’ while speaking to Le360 Sport in January.

“Like any Moroccan footballer, my dream is to pull on the Morocco national team’s shirt. I equally want to help my club as much as possible. And, as a consequence, to play for a big club in Europe.”

Despite the heritage and history, Rangers do not match the calibre or quality of the European sides who compete in the top five leagues. They are well aware of their position both on and off the pitch and should welcome any ambitious offer to reduce the debt and pursue a squad rebuild.
