Sorana Mihaela Cirstea was born on 7 April 1990, to Mihai and Liliana in Bucharest, Romania. Her mother Liliana introduced her to tennis when she was just four years old. There was no looking back for the future World No. 21.
Cirstea’s father owns an ice cream factory in Targoviste. She also resides in Targoviste and has a younger brother named Mihnea.

She became an ITF Junior Circuit top-ten player and reached the highest combined ranking of No. 6 in 2006. Cirstea won the 2005 German Junior Open after finishing runner-up in the previous edition.

The Romanian tennis pro reached her second semifinal in 2013 at the Bank of the West Classic. Her standout performance in 2013 came at the Rogers Cup. She reached her first final in five years before losing to Serena Williams. However, during the campaign, Cirstea beat two former number-one players, Caroline Wozniacki and Jelena Janković, and former Grand Slam champions Petra Kvitová and Li Na.
Cirstea’s inconsistency and some injuries made her wait 13 years for her second singles title. In the 2021 Istanbul Cup, she defeated top seed Elisa Mertens in straight sets to bag the title.
In 2022, she reached the fourth round at the Australian Open. At the Lyon Open, she made it to the semifinals before losing to Dayana Yastremska. Cirstea also made it to the semifinals at the Istanbul Open and the Birmingham Classic.
