During talks to become Arsenal’s new sporting director, Andrea Berta has already confirmed his admiration of former Atletico Madrid striker Matheus Cunha, TBR Football exclusively understands.
Arsenal have long-standing interest in Cunha, who has scored 15 goals in 29 games for Wolverhampton Wanderers this season.
Of course, Wolves recruited the Brazilian striker from Atletico in 2023, who Berta was in charge of at the time.
Berta signed Cunha for Atletico from Hertha Berlin in 2021, where he scored only seven goals in his 54 appearances for the Spanish side.
Now, the Brazilian might even be destined for a reunion with Berta at the Emirates Stadium should the Italian get his wish.

Graeme Bailey – TBR Football’s chief correspondent, understands that Berta remains a huge fan of Cunha, a player he always had belief in the first time he signed him.
Fortunately, Cunha has long been on Arsenal’s radar and remains under consideration for the Gunners.

Berta is set to join Arsenal and during talks with the club, the Italian confirmed his fondness for Cunha which highlights that he comes into the job with a similar mindset to those already in power in north London.
Arsenal’s prospective new sporting director has a long list of tasks already for the upcoming months and signing a new forward is at the top of Berta’s list of things to do.
Mikel Arteta’s squad could possibly even be strengthened by two new forwards if the club go for a straight number nine and wide man.
Of course, it will also be a priority for Berta to finalise the club’s move for Martin Zubimendi, which his arrival will not impact on.
Matheus Cunha’s improving goalscoring record
As mentioned, Cunha hasn’t always been prolific for his clubs in the past, partly because of his versatility – he’s often been played out wide or even as a number 10.
But the Brazilian is now finding a way to score regularly for Wolves regardless of which attacking role he’s playing in.
Club | Games | Goals | Assists |
FC Sion | 32 | 10 | 8 |
RB Leipzig | 52 | 9 | 3 |
Hertha Berlin | 40 | 13 | 10 |
Atletico Madrid | 54 | 7 | 8 |
Wolverhampton Wanderers | 85 | 31 | 13 |
Liverpool manager Arne Slot thinks Cunha can play at the top level – seemingly holding a similar view to Berta.
Cunha recently scored against Liverpool at Anfield, a feat that Arsenal will still be hoping to achieve on their visit to Merseyside before the end of the season.
And should Berta get his wish, Arsenal would look a lot more dangerous next season with Cunha at their disposal.
Of course, it should be mentioned that Cunha has a £63m release clause following his latest contract renewal with Wolves.
