‘He’s not good enough’: Jamie Carragher says Liverpool have a £65m player who’s simply not up to it

Liverpool have been absolutely brilliant this season.

The Reds are top of the Premier League, and after a 1-0 win against PSG last week, they have one foot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League too.

However, it’s not all been plain sailing for Liverpool and some of their players this season.

Indeed, despite leading the Premier League and being almost perfect in Europe, some of the Reds’ players have still come under scrutiny.

Andy Robertson has been criticised this season, and he’s not the only player who has been under the microscope.

Another player who has come under particularly intense scrutiny is Darwin Nunez.

Nunez was a £65m signing from Benfica a few years ago, and he’s yet to live up to expectations.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher has been discussing Arsenal’s striker situation, and he made a point about Nunez when discussing the landscape of strikers in the game right now.

Indeed, according to Carragher, Nunez simply isn’t good enough, while he made the same point about Rasmus Hojlund at Manchester United and Nicolas Jackson at Chelsea.

Jamie Carragher says Darwin Nunez isn’t good enough

Carragher made a point about Nunez when discussing the state of strikers in the Premier League.

The pundit says that the Uruguayan just isn’t good enough, and he said the same about a number of other number nines.

“Think about some of the other big teams in the Premier League, where are the strikers?” Carragher asked.

“Liverpool signed Nunez, he’s not good enough. Hojlund is not good enough for Manchester United, Jackson is not good enough for Chelsea, there is a dearth of top quality strikers around the world. So when Arsenal are looking for this guy to take them to the title, it’s very difficult to find the guy who will give you these goals.”

Carragher says that Nunez isn’t good enough, and while that may sound harsh, he’s not too far wrong.

Indeed, Nunez hasn’t performed at the level you’d expect a £65m striker to for Liverpool, and the stats show it.

Games 134
Goals 40

Of course, Nunez has had some memorable moments – just this weekend against Southampton he was the Reds’ saviour, however, those moments are much too sparce.

Nunez is a raw talent, but at the age of almost 26, there are only so many excuses you can make for a player.

Nunez has been linked with a move away from Liverpool in the summer transfer window, and after three disappointing seasons at Anfield, it may soon be time for the Reds to cash in on Nunez and say goodbye.
