‘I don’t know if you saw’: What Tottenham physios were doing with Micky van de Ven’s hamstring on Sunday

Micky van de Ven made his long-awaited return from injury against Bournemouth on Saturday.

At one point, Tottenham had 11 players out injured, but now, Spurs are back almost to full strength.

Micky Van de Ven had missed months of action before his return against Bournemouth.

The Dutchman came off the bench to play the final half an hour on Sunday, and before he came on, Spurs’ physios were taking no chances with the Dutchman.

Indeed, according to Tom Allnutt speaking on The Tottenham Way Podcast, Spurs physios were doing work on Van de Ven’s hamstring for around five minutes before he came on, making sure the muscle was as warm as possible.

Tottenham physios did work on Micky van de Ven’s hamstring

Allnutt shared what he spotted Tottenham physios doing with Van de Ven just before he was subbed on.

The journalist says that Van de Ven was having a lot of work done on his hamstring, as the physios tried to make sure he was as warmed up as he could possibly be before entering the fray.

“I don’t know if you saw from where you were sitting, but there was someone, I can’t remember who it was. There was someone whose job it was on the side after Van de Ven had basically taken his kit off and was waiting to come on. He was basically down on his knees, sort of wobbling, Van de Ven’s hamstring for about five or six minutes, rubbing cream in, massaging it, giving it a shake,” Allnutt said.

“You sort of thought after three or four months of rehab and recovery, this is the last, let’s just give it everything we can to make sure this little muscle is as warm as possible.”

Tottenham weren’t taking any risks with Van de Ven’s hamstring at the weekend, and it’s easy to understand why.

Indeed, Van de Ven has a nasty history of hamstring issues, and, as Spurs fans know only too well, those problems can easily re-occur.

Ryan Sessegnon’s Spurs career was ruined by hamstring problems, and if Van de Ven isn’t careful he could be at risk of heading the same way.

Van de Ven has had no fewer than five hamstring injuries since 2022, and that is something of a concern.

Van de Ven is the fastest player in the Premier League, but it would appear as though there are some risks attached to moving at such speed when you have a history of hamstring issues.

Fingers crossed the bulk of the defender’s problems are now behind him.
