Liverpool are out of the Champions League after losing to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties on Tuesday night.
The Reds and the Parisians played out a classic at Anfield, with Ousmane Dembele’s 12th-minute goal taking the tie to 1-1 on aggregate.
Neither Liverpool nor PSG could be separated after extra time, forcing the Champions League tie to go to penalties.
Liverpool only scored one of their penalties, with Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones both forcing saves from Gianluigi Donnarumma.
A number of Reds fans felt manager Arne Slot made a particularly poor decision which cost their side dearly in the end.
Liverpool fans not happy to see Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai taken off before penalties
Liverpool fans were unhappy to see Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai taken off before penalties.
Both players usually take spot kicks for their countries, and their absence from the penalty shootout was felt.
One fan wrote on X: “Taking off Mac Allister and Szoboszlai before a penalty shootout is madness, I’m sorry.”
Another said: “We picked the wrong penalty takers. Van Dijk should’ve been next after Salah.
“Should’ve kept Szoboszlai and Mac Allister for penalties too. Trent being injured eliminated one of our better takers too.”
The criticism kept coming, with one fan writing: “Removing Szoboszlai and Mac Allister was a massive mistake.
“So many players who aren’t typical penalty takers. Absolutely brutal.”
Another said: “That’s us out. We should’ve kept Szoboszlai and Mac Allister on for pens.”
Another wrote: “Got to hand it to PSG, they’re the best team Liverpool have faced. On another night, LFC go through.
“Slot got it wrong. Nunez should have started and been nowhere near the pens, took off Macca and Szoboszlai, two of the best penalty takers at the club…”
What Sky Sports journalists noticed about Dominik Szoboszlai when he came off
Slot opted to take Mac Allister off just after the end of normal time, while Szoboszlai was substituted midway through extra time.
It’s unknown whether Szoboszlai was injured or fatigued, but Sky Sports reporter Vinny O’Connor noticed how gutted the player looked when he came off.
“There was a pained expression on the face of Szoboszlai after being replaced by Harvey Elliott during half time of extra time,” he said on Sky Sports News.
“I can’t work out whether he’s just gutted to be subbed or it’s the fact he’s run himself into the ground.
“I reckon at this stage he’ll feel more tense in the dugout than he would still being part of things out on the pitch.”
Meanwhile, Adam Bate said: “The hero of Paris is on but Szoboszlai looks absolutely gutted to be the one to drop out.
“He has been Liverpool’s best attacking player tonight but, unlike in the first leg, Slot wants to keep Salah out there. Understandable.”
Liverpool are next in action on Sunday when they take on Newcastle United in the League Cup final, the game on 16 March kicking off at 4:30pm.
That will be their last game until after the international break, when they host Everton in the Merseyside derby at 8pm on Wednesday 2 April.
