Well deserved praise!
Bayern Munich recorded a 2-0 win away at Bayer Leverkusen to progress to the Champions League quarterfinals 5-0 on aggregate. Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen heaped praise on the team and the performance during the celebrations.
“A great day. We can all be happy with this day,” Dreesen said in a banquet speech to the team after the match (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “A big applause for Vincent and his team. If we look back, it wasn’t an easy path, with the playoffs and the tough return leg against Celtic. Then with Leverkusen, our toughest domestic opponent in the past two years. I think the order in German football has been restored.
“But we have to stay down to earth. With Inter, we have a tough opponent awaiting us in the quarterfinal. Italian champions, top 8 in the league phase and conceded only two goals so far. We have good and bad memories against them. We’re looking forward to these two games in April.”
Dreesen continued, making sure to highlight some standout performers too. “It’s difficult to single someone out with praise today. You all played an incredible game, you showed team spirit, you fought for each other. As I said I don’t want to praise anyone individually but congratulations Harry on becoming the first English player to score 10 goals in a Champions League season. More to come because it’s not over yet.
“I want to mention another player. Of course we’re all sad that Manuel Neuer is injured, but it’s great to see what Jonas Urbig did for the team today, how calm he was on the pitch, with two to three good saves. A very special applause for Jonas Urbig. I hope this journey will continue, carry on like you did today and in the first leg.”
Dreesen is certainly justified in his praise, as Urbig and Kane have been key to ensuring Bayern’s qualification across both legs. Who do you think stood out? Do you agree with Dreesen’s comments? Tell us what you think in the comments below?
