Dele Alli is being backed to become an academy coach at one of his former clubs.
The 28-year-old midfielder has not played competitive first-team minutes since February 2023, when he featured for Turkish side Besiktas in their 0-0 draw against Antalyaspor.
Dele has been unfortunate with injuries. His season-loan deal at the Turkish club came to an end in April 2023 after he needed surgery to repair a tendon injury.
And on his much-anticipated return to parent club Everton, Alli picked up further setbacks, including a groin injury that required surgery.
However, the midfielder has recently joined Serie A side Como on an 18-month contract, with an option to extend for an additional 12 months.
“The club believes in Dele’s potential and is committed to helping him rediscover his best form,” said manager Cesc Fabregas. “His experience and leadership qualities will undoubtedly benefit the squad.”
Just over a month after his arrival and Dele was named in a matchday squad for the first time in two years on the evening of March 2, when Como came up against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.
It looks like the midfielder is closer than ever to making a much-anticipated return to the pitch as he gradually integrates into Fabregas’ squad.
That being said, former Spurs striker Clive Allen feels that there may be a role for Dele at Tottenham in the future.
“Maybe that [a return to Tottenham] could be possible,” he told Tottenham News. “Every football supporter will be wishing him well at Como. He’s had a big dip, which can happen.
“The fact that he’s bouncing back and getting back into the game, let’s hope he can do it. Maybe one day he can get back up to the level we know.”
Allen added: “A role at Tottenham maybe. I’m not sure if he’s a coach or a possible manager, an academy coach to give knowledge to young people. He may look at educating young players around depression and avoiding certain situations.“

Alli is not quite ready to make his debut for Como, according to Fabregas.
“It’s a progression for him,” he said in a recent press conference. “He came with us to Rome. He’s not yet ready to play, he will be on the bench tomorrow as well, and then we’ll see… I need to feel the right moment to bring him in.”
