Idrissa Gueye was at Anfield to celebrate as his former club Paris Saint-Germain eliminated Liverpool from the Champions League on Tuesday.
Ousmane Dembele’s first-half strike was enough to secure a 1-0 victory for Les Parisiens on the night, taking the last-16 tie to penalties.
Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones both missed from the spot, and Everton midfielder Gueye filmed both of Gianluigi Donnarumma’s saves — presumably from a hospitality section at Anfield — and uploaded them to his Instagram story.
Cheers could be heard from the area that Gueye was sitting in as PSG secured its place in the quarter-finals courtesy of a 4-2 shoot-out win, and the French giant will meet either Aston Villa or Club Brugge next.
Gueye spent three years at PSG between 2019 and 2022, making over 100 appearances for the club in all competitions before returning to Merseyside for a second stint with Everton.
Meanwhile, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot said that the Reds’ second-leg defeat was “the best game of football I have ever been involved in.” He added on Amazon Prime: “It was an incredible performance, especially if you compare it with last week. Maybe we ran out of luck because the margins were so small.
“We played the perfect game, except for scoring a goal. It was similar to Paris last week, when they played the perfect game and didn’t score. And then in extra time, they were maybe a little bit better.”
Slot’s and Liverpool’s focus must now quickly switch to Sunday’s Carabao Cup final versus Newcastle, with recovery key after 120 gruelling minutes at Anfield.
Ibrahima Konate and Trent Alexander-Arnold were both forced off the field against PSG, with the latter unlikely to be ready to play against Newcastle. The right-back appeared to jar his ankle in the second half and was unable to continue, while Slot suggested that Konate was suffering from cramp.
“He had to come off – that’s never a good sign,” Slot said of Alexander-Arnold. “From what I heard from people that saw the images of how he got injured, it didn’t look very good. I would be surprised if he is [available] for Sunday.”
