Tottenham Hotspur have had a very tricky season with injuries, however, it has allowed Ange Postecoglou the chance to unearth some gems who may otherwise not have had he chance to play.

On Thursday, Spurs face their biggest game of the season so far as they take on AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League Round of 16, facing a 1-0 deficit.

The Lilywhites will need their top players to really step up and Maddison has been heaping praise on one of those players who could have a big impact on the tie.

James Maddison claims Djed Spence has been ‘phenomenal’

James Maddison says that Djed Spence has been ‘phenomenal’ this season and he has loved seeing the 24-year-old given so much game time.

The England international claims that Spence’s emergence in the team has been a real blessing from the club’s injury crisis this season.

Maddison told Sky Sports: “The one blessing that it kind of created was the fact that we got exposure to the young lads and the lads who hadn’t played as much, so the likes of Djed (Spence) got his opportunity and he’s been phenomenal.”

Spence’s form has played him into contention for the England squad, which just highlights how unbelievable his turnaround in fortunes has been in North London.

James Maddison hails Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray

Maddison has also been speaking about the two incredible teenage talents in Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray who have also been given plenty of game time.

The former Leicester City man is confident that the experiences which they’ve had this season will greatly benefit their development.

“Lucas (Bergvall) and Archie (Gray) have come in as 18-year-olds and played a lot of football, more than probably what the manager and the club had hoped for their transition into the first team, but that’ll leave them in good stead,” added the 28-year-old.
