It’s red against blue in the road to Munich.
Having put Bayer Leverkusen to the sword, Bayern Munich’s next opponent in the Champions League will be Inter Milan.
Inter have had quite a strong Champions League campaign so far. They finished fourth in the league phase, level on 19 points with FC Barcelona and Arsenal. This earned them a direct bye to the round of 16, where they faced Feyenoord, who had beaten Bayern 3-0 beforehand. Inter, however, were not fazed by this fact, and brushed them aside 2-0 in Rotterdam before getting the job done in Milan with a 2-1 win.
The last time Bayern faced Inter in the Champions League was back in the 2022/23 season’s group stage, when Julian Nagelsmann was still in charge. Bayern won both games 2-0, with goals from Leroy Sané, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Benjamin Pavard, and an own goal.
Speaking of Pavard, fate had it that he would move to none other than Inter a year later, so a reunion awaits in April. Not only that, but old Bayern goalkeeper Yann Sommer also joined Inter around the same time as Pavard. Bayern fans will be hoping that Sommer does not become his usual godly self against Bayern as he has done many times in the past.
The tie will be played on April 8/9 and 15/16, with the first leg in Munich and the second in Milan. It will be an extremely challenging week for Bayern, as sandwiched between the two games is a heavyweight Bundesliga clash against Borussia Dortmund. Away trips to Augsburg and Heidenheim adorn either side of the Inter tie.
