As Newcastle await Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday, a surprising bit of team news has emerged.
Jarell Quansah set to start Carabao Cup final at right-back, where he only has eight senior appearances
Paul Joyce of The Times has now revealed that Jarell Quansah is expected to start on the right of defence at Wembley this Sunday, after Trent Alexander-Arnold went off with an injury against PSG to join Conor Bradley in the treatment room.
The Liverpool No.78 did well against the French giants after coming on in the 73rd minute, hitting the post with a fine header while largely keeping PSG quiet down his side.
However, the worry for Slot will be the fact Quansah has only ever made eight senior appearances at right-back throughout his professional career, compared to 70 in the centre of defence.
One lifeline for Quansah is that seven of these eight appearances on the right of defence have come under the Dutchman this season, so it is not exactly as if the 22-year-old is unfamiliar with the position.
Furthermore, Anthony Gordon is also suspended – who typically plays on the left wing – meaning the Liverpool academy graduate will not have to directly face one of Newcastle’s best players.

While Quansah, who Slot dropped after one game, may not be as dangerous of an attacking outlet as Alexander-Arnold and Bradley have proven to be, the Reds boast a strong record with him on the right of defence.

In terms of senior games, Liverpool have won five and drawn two of the eight matches the Warrington-born defender has started at right-back.
Quansah also won both of the U18 Premier League outings he started in that position too, while boasting one win and one draw from three games as a right-back in the Premier League 2.
