Vincent Kompany looks to remain as humble after defeating Bayer Leverkusen as he stayed calm after losing to VfL Bochum

There is no reason for the team to take their eyes off the prize.

Bayern Munich’s fans certainly celebrated last week’s 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the Allianz Arena, overjoyed at breaking Die Werkself’s 6 game unbeaten streak against the Bavarians. The weekend loss that followed, a 3-2 loss against VFL Bochum in the Bundesliga, was then a real shock and frustrated fans, though it did not kill the hype. Fans were then overjoyed to see Bayern confirm their quarterfinal berth with a 2-0 away victory over Bayer Leverkusen, allowing themselves to be swept up by the hope of winning the whole competition.

However, head coach Vincent Kompany did not allow himself the same luxury of experiencing that joy. In fact, he likes to stay very humble:

“When things go well, I try and stay humble in these moments,” Kompany explained in the post match press conference, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “We won, but there were no big statements to make here. It’s the same as when we lose like we did against Bochum. We have to go through the storm; it’s part of the job. I won’t surf on a hype wave now. My job is no different from that of the players; we had to get a win. Now our focus switches. Nothing is won until it’s won.”

Stay humble, eh? Erling Haaland would certainly approve of that message.

But he has a point. While part of being a fan is allowing the emotions to bring one up and down through the storm, it is the team and the coach’s job to keep their eye on the prize.
