Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has admitted he has “no idea” whether he will still be at Anfield next season.

Van Dijk was part of the Liverpool side that suffered a disappointing evening in Tuesday’s Champions League last-16 clash against Paris Saint-Germain.

Liverpool’s narrow first-leg lead was cancelled out by Ousmane Dembele‘s 12th-minute effort, which proved to be the only goal in 120 minutes of action at Anfield.

PSG prevailed in the subsequent penalty shootout, with Gianluigi Donnarumma making saves to deny Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones.

Liverpool’s penalty shootout heartbreak has led to questions as to whether Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Van Dijk have played their final Champions League games for the Reds.

The trio are out of contract at the end of the season and it is unclear whether any of them will agree new deals with the Merseyside club.

Van Dijk was unable to offer any assurances when he was asked whether he would still be at the club for the start of the 2025-26 season.

“I have no idea,” Van Dijk said after Tuesday’s defeat. “I still have no idea at the moment. Genuinely. I have no idea at the moment.

“It is not on hold. Nothing on hold. There’s just… I keep saying the same thing. Listen, there are ten games to go, and that is my full focus.

“If there is news, you guys will know it. I don’t even know myself. Everyone knows there are some conversations behind the scenes but that is about it.

“At the moment, I don’t even know what will happen next year. If anyone says they do know, they are lying to your face.”

Van Dijk eyeing Wembley glory

Liverpool are still on course to lift the Premier League title, having established a mammoth 15-point lead at the top of the table.

They also have the chance to clinch their first piece of silverware under Arne Slot in Sunday’s EFL Cup final against Newcastle United.

Van Dijk says that Liverpool will quickly put their Champions League disappointment behind them as they turn their focus to their upcoming trip to Wembley.

“There are two big prizes we can still get,” Van Dijk said. “We are going to give it everything. We have to feel the disappointment tonight but from tomorrow it is about recovery.

“Be ready for a good one. If we bring this intensity in Wembley with our fans, then I am positive. I am always positive. But I am really looking forward to being back out there.”

Slot is hopeful Ibrahima Konate will be fit for Sunday’s final, although he is unsure whether Alexander-Arnold will be fit after being withdrawn with an injury issue against PSG.
