Barcelona ‘reignite interest’ in 23-goal marksman as Catalan giants seek long-term Robert Lewandowski replacement

Barcelona have reportedly reignited their interest in Lille forward Jonathan David.

The Canada international has been in red-hot form for Les Dogues during the 2024-25 campaign, scoring 23 goals and registering 10 assists in 40 appearances in all competitions, including nine goals and four assists in the Champions League.

David’s contract will expire at the end of June, though, and he has already confirmed his plans to leave on a free transfer.

“Yes, I will be free at the end of the season. And as for my future, I hope to grow, to become a better player, and to play for the biggest clubs in the world, if I can,” David recently told Onze Mondial.

“But first of all, I just want to have fun, never forget that football is fun. I started playing football because I had fun. And even though it has now become my job, you have to remember that I wake up every morning for football, for the pleasure of playing.

“Do you want any clues about my future? You will all know, in due time, that is at the end of the season. I will not comment before then. First of all, I want to finish this season well, the end looks exciting and I want to play well and help the team. And when the season is over, the decision will be made and announced.”

Barcelona ‘ready to move’ for David

There is currently a host of speculation surrounding David’s future, with Manchester United, Arsenal and West Ham United also believed to be keen to sign him on a free transfer this summer.

Barcelona, at one stage, were regarded as the favourites, but it was then claimed that the Catalan outfit had dropped their interest to pursue other targets, believing that David would not suit their style of play.

However, according to Fichajes, Hansi Flick‘s side have had a change of heart, and the La Liga title hopefuls are now firmly pushing to win the race for the Canadian at the end of the season.

The report claims that Barcelona are finding it difficult to ignore his form, and the Catalan team view him as the ideal signing considering that they are currently working to a strict budget.

David is believed to have a host of offers on the table, with the strongest interest seemingly coming from the Premier League, and it is set to be a fascinating race for his signature this summer.

Would David be a good signing for Barcelona?

Robert Lewandowski has had an excellent season for Barcelona, scoring 34 goals and registering three assists in 39 appearances, and the experienced striker will spend another campaign with the Catalan giants.

Flick’s team need a long-term replacement for Lewandowski, though, and David fits the brief considering his age and the fact that he has proven himself in a major European league, in addition to the Champions League.

Newcastle United‘s Alexander Isak and Porto‘s Samu Aghehowa are among those currently being linked with lucrative moves to Barcelona during this summer’s transfer window.

However, the Catalan team should not pass up the chance to bring in a player who has scored 107 goals and registered 27 assists in 223 appearances for Lille on a free transfer.
