Could Germany be destined for their fifth World Cup title in 2026?
Former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann has taken this German national team from its worst state in years, to back into the favorites discussion in a matter of less than a year. This team is already radically different than Hansi Flick’s side, and it looks like it is for the better thus far. Despite the right direction with Nagelsmann, the German coach believes the team is ready for silverware.
Nagelsmann was recently asked if he extended until 2028 because he believes Germany won’t reach its peak until 2028. Despite extending his contract until EURO 2028, the country won’t necessarily have to wait that long to see themselves on top of the world’s stage.
“No. I believe that we can reach our peak at the World Cup. Nagelsmann told Frankfurter Allgemeine (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). The learning curve that I see with us is much steeper than what I know from clubs.”
German fans are desperate to see Die Mannschaft lift another trophy, and the team is certainly on the right track, but anything can happen. Even if Germany were favorites, mistakes happen and calls can go the other team’s way. Nonetheless, there is reason for optimism at the moment and it is clear by the excitement in the nation.
While not the most important title, a UEFA Nations League win would be a massive indicator of what is to come for Germany at next year’s big tournament.
