Reducing the wage bill while maintaining competitiveness was never going to happen immediately…
Bayern Munich’s wage bill has grown too high and the club is actively looking to reduce it. No, this is not speculation or theory, but fact, with Bayern’s executives clearly stating this fact. However, it hardly seems as if the club is meeting that goal at the moment, given the expensive new contracts and wage rises the likes of Alphonso “Phonzy” Davies and Jamal Musiala have received.
Of course, the rationale for keeping the two, given that they are key players for the club, is rather simple. Still, it must make reducing the wage bill a nightmare, right? But board member for sport Max Eberl hints at a multi-year plan to reduce the wage bill, despite the short-term increase:
“With Jamal and Phonzy, we are talking about players who are young and have a corresponding value and a high demand in Europe. Therefore, we had to act within the scope of our possibilities in order to remain competitive at the highest level in the future,” the former Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director said. “Especially since we have the third oldest team in the Champions League. The two players are 22 and 24 years old and have outstanding qualities. So the extensions were only logical. We have a plan over several transfer windows. With the aim of being competitive and efficient, while also remaining reliable for players and reducing the salary structure at the same time. That’s our path.”
Ultimately, Eberl was thrust into a situation in which several key players were running down their contracts. He had to make certain concessions to retain the team’s quality (whether he made too many concessions is up for debate). Now that the immediate worry is finally dealt with, Eberl can hopefully finally focus on implementing that plan he has.
