A Newcastle United supporter has taken his fandom to new heights by getting a haircut inspired by a Greggs sausage roll ahead of the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool. Matty Nicholls, 29, surprised his barber with the unusual request to have the iconic bakery item shaved into the back of his head in anticipation of the big match at Wembley on Sunday.
The beloved bakery chain Greggs is headquartered in Newcastle and opened its first shop in the city. Barber Mich Lange, who often styles the hair of Newcastle United players including Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Kieran Trippier, took on the challenge at Edits Barbershop in Newcastle.
The unique buzzcut features the Greggs sausage roll peeking out of a paper bag complete with the brand’s logo. Matty, from Ashington, Northumberland, has been attending Newcastle matches since he was a child and now holds a season ticket, going to every game with his 11-year-old daughter.
He will be showcasing his new look as his team faces off against Liverpool at Wembley, hoping to end their long wait for a major English trophy since 1955, as reported by NeedToKnow. The innovative “short, bake and sides” haircut left fans amused, while others had a more critical opinion.
One fan joked: “I’ll be in for my chicken bake on Saturday mate.” Another added: “Whole new meaning to a flakey scalp.”
One fan couldn’t resist poking fun, posting: “Short back and sausage roll.” Echoing the mood, another quipped: “Trims looking tasty bruv.” And laughter ensued as a third said: “This can’t be real.”
