Arsenal and Manchester United often have common targets in the transfer windows.
The two historic English clubs share a very big rivalry. Yes, the battles between them are no longer what they used to be, but it is still a huge spectacle whenever they go up against each other.
Arsenal and Manchester United both tried to sign Benjamin Sesko but they were rejected by the RB Leipzig star in last summer’s transfer window.
Manchester United were keen to sign another attacker as well, but they failed to do it for one reason. That player joined Arsenal in the end.
Why Raheem Sterling joined Arsenal instead of Manchester United last summer
Raheem Sterling’s future was up in the air in last summer’s transfer window.
The Englishman was free to leave Chelsea. Things just hadn’t worked out for him at Stamford Bridge, and the Blues wanted him gone.
The Daily Mail have now shared what happened last summer.
It has been revealed that Sterling was actually preparing to join Manchester United on loan after key figures at Old Trafford vouched for him and wanted to bring him in.
The Red Devils believed Sterling would’ve been a ‘big brother figure’ to Marcus Rashford, who was still at Manchester United and struggling.
However, just when it looked like the deal would happen, it collapsed because PSR rules made Sterling unaffordable for United.
The report claims that Tottenham and Crystal Palace also wanted to sign Sterling, but it was Arsenal who got him in the end on favourable terms.
Raheem Sterling broke a Champions League record during Arsenal vs PSV
Sterling got a rare start for Arsenal against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The Gunners had a 7-1 lead in the first leg, and Mikel Arteta got the opportunity to make several changes. Sterling got the nod, and he delivered.
The Englishman, previously hailed as ‘brilliant’ by Conor Gallagher (BBC) picked up two assists and thus became ‘the first ever English player to be directly involved in at least one goal for four different clubs in the Champions League’.
Sterling also has the fourth most direct goal contributions by an English player in Champions League history – he went past Frank Lampard on Wednesday night.
One more goal or assist in the next round will see him equal Wayne Rooney’s output in the competition. That would be a fantastic achievement.
However, Sterling is suspended for the first leg of Arsenal’s clash against Real Madrid.
