Ledley King has named the Tottenham Hotspur defender who he believes could in fact be good enough to play as an attacker.
The former Tottenham Hotspur captain has been lauding the player for his all-round ability, but he’s been particularly impressed with his attacking attributes.
Ledley King suggests Djed Spence could become an attacker
Ledley King claims that Djed Spence’s ability on the ball means that he could be good enough to play in a more advanced role.
The Tottenham legend has been so impressed by the defender’s ability at both ends of the pitch.
King told SpursPLAY: “Defensively he’s very difficult to beat in one-on-one situations, his energy, his dynamism, he wants to get forward and attack players at every moment.
“He’s just been fantastic considering the way he’s had to deal with difficult circumstances – he’s been terrific.”
When asked about how impressed he’s been with Spence’s ability on the ball, King added: “He looks like someone who could play further forward, in fact, that’s how good he looks going forward. I was delighted that he was able to get his first goal, he deserved that for sure.”
Recently, James Maddison also praised Spence who has done a brilliant job coming into the team whilst Postecoglou’s squad have suffered several injuries.
Spence’s form has put him in contention for an England call-up with Thomas Tuchel set to name his first Three Lions squad on Friday.
Could Djed Spence emulate Gareth Bale’s transition from full-back to winger?
Tottenham fans will be familiar with a full-back transitioning into a winger having seen Gareth Bale go from a promising left-back to one of the world’s best wingers.
Spence has two goals and two assists to his name this season along with averaging 0.6 key passes per game, 1.7 dribbles and an 86.9 percent pass success rate.
For now, Spence’s future very much seems as a full-back given his defensive qualities, however, King is right, he’s so good on the ball, an eventual move to an attacking role could be worth exploring.
