Fresh from booking their spot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, Real Madrid will continue their La Liga campaign with a contest against top-four hopefuls Villarreal on Saturday night.
Los Blancos beat Atletico Madrid on penalties on Wednesday evening to secure their position in the final eight of the European Cup.
Real Madrid were 2-1 winners over Rayo Vallecano in the league last weekend, meanwhile, which moved them into second spot in the table, level on points with Barcelona, who have a game in hand.
Villarreal, meanwhile, are fifth in Spain’s top flight, five points behind fourth-placed Athletic Bilbao with a game in hand, and they will enter the match off the back of a shock 1-0 defeat at Alaves.
Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides ahead of what is shaping up to be a fascinating contest this weekend.

Head-to-head record
Previous meetings: 52
Real Madrid wins: 29
Draws: 17
Villarreal wins: 6
Real Madrid have locked horns with Villarreal on 52 occasions throughout history, and it is the capital giants that comfortably lead the head-to-head record, boasting 29 wins to Villarreal’s six.
There have also been 17 draws between the two sides, while Cristiano Ronaldo is the all-time leading goalscorer in this fixture, having netted 13 times against Villarreal during his time with Real Madrid.
The two teams last locked horns in October 2024, with Real Madrid running out 2-0 winners on home soil in La Liga.
Last season, Los Blancos were 4-1 winners at Bernabeu in December 2023, but the points were shared in a pulsating 4-4 draw at the home of Villarreal towards the end of the campaign.
In La Liga, the teams have met on 49 occasions, with Real Madrid winning 26 times to Villarreal’s six, but two of their last five meetings in Spain’s top flight have been won by the Yellow Submarine, one of which came at home.
Real Madrid have been victorious in just two of their last seven La Liga matches against Villarreal, with the points being shared on three occasions, and the capital giants have found the Yellow Submarine to be a difficult opponent in recent seasons.
Los Blancos have not actually won back-to-back league games against Villarreal since 2014, which is incredible considering their status in world football.
Villarreal can take plenty of encouragement from their recent displays against the reigning Spanish and European champions, who will enter the game off the back of an energy-zapping Madrid derby.
