Liverpool have missed out on a number of players at youth level over the years.

Indeed, Jeremie Frimpong could’ve signed for Liverpool when he was a youngster but he opted to join Manchester City instead.

Meanwhile, Robbie Keane almost joined Liverpool as a teenager too, but his mother blocked the deal.

Now, speaking on the More than a Match Podcast, Brandon Williams has claimed that he had the chance to sign for Liverpool when he was young.

The former Manchester United defender says that eight clubs were in for him when he was a kid, but, ultimately he decided to sign for United as he was a boyhood fan and lived close to the training ground.

Brandon Williams could have joined Liverpool

Williams spoke about his options as a young player.

The full-back says he had no fewer than eight teams in for him at youth level, and Liverpool were amongst them.

“We used to play a tournament in Blackpool every year with my team, Bury Amateurs by the way. Then we went to Blackpool the first year when I was seven. We had eight scouts, Blackburn, Everton, Liverpool, United, City, Bolton, all the teams in the local area,” Williams said.

“My dad was a big United fan and he started taking me to games there, so we chose United, started going to The Cliff, we lived like 10 minutes away, so it was an easy choice.”

Brandon Williams was released by Manchester United at the end of last season when his contract expired.

Despite playing numerous games at first-team level for United, Williams hasn’t been able to find a new club.

The full-back is in limbo at the moment after an injury, but he says that he’s back on the right track now and looking to make his way back into the game.

“I ended up picking up an injury. I had the summer off, I needed it, I needed to go on holiday. I went with a couple of friends, then I ended up staying in Spain by myself just chilling,” Williams said.

“I’ve been training now since July, everyday, in the gym, got back on the pitch in October and November, and I’m nearly back there, good progress, excited to get back on the pitch and start again.”

Williams won’t have the likes of United, City, Everton and Liverpool chasing him this time around as he looks for a new club, but, who knows? Perhaps a team like Blackburn or Bolton in the local area could be a potential landing spot for the defender.

Southampton wanted Williams at one point, and with their impending relegation to the Championship, perhaps that’s a move they could consider again.

Williams will be hoping to find a new club and get back on the pitch before too long.
